Barbie, the iconic doll which has pleased countless generations of little girls, is 50-years-old today. This video honors the different looks, shapes, and fashions Barbie has sported in that time. Is it me or did she used to be hotter than she is today?
The 50th anniversary of Barbie comes in March, 2009 after she was first unveiled to the public at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959. Her full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts and I have to say, she’s looking good for her age.
Barbie was created by Ruth Handler, who watched how her daughter played with paper dolls and realized there was a gap in the marketplace. This has been clearly proved by the fact Barbie is still with us half a century later.
However, despite Mattel making a big thing of the 50th anniversary, sales are down and it is unlikely Barbie will remain with us for another 50 years. Kids seem to have moved on a little, usually to their Wii and laptop, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
