R. Lee Ermey, a former staff sergeant in the U.S. Marines, who then took up acting after 11 years in the military, has died at the age of 74.
Ermey appeared in lots of films, including Apocalypse Now, Mississippi Burning, and Toy Story, but he was best known for his role in Full Metal Jacket.
In Full Metal Jacket, Ermey played the part of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. He basically barked insults at new recruits to toughen them up for the Vietnam War.
Ermey died from pneumonia-related complications. He’ll be remembered for his military career and for his iconic roles in several films.
