Against Me! lead singer Tom Gabel has announced he is transgender, has a condition called gender dysphoria, and will soon begin living life as a female.
This song is called Transgender Dysphoria Blues, which the band has performed live. The meaning of the title and the words becomes clearer with this news, as revealed in an interview in Rolling Stone magazine.
Gabel is planning on taking female hormones and may eventually undergo gender reassignment surgery. He will change his name to Laura Jane Grace but remain married to his wife.
This is a brave move by the lead singer of a rock band. Hopefully Against Me! will gain more fans than they lose as a result of the revelation. I do wonder how this will effect the band’s longterm future though.
