I know it’s early days, but it seems like there are just two types of girls in the American Idol top 24. There are the sunny blondes, with blue eyes and perfect hair. Then there are the black girls with oodles of soul. And then, there’s Amanda Overmyer.
Dressed all in black with a menacing sneer, she delivered a rocking version of the Van Morrison classic Baby Please Don’t Go. Watching her is like watching a modern day Janis Joplin, from the killer rasp to the empassioned performance.
She’s certainly different from the run-of-the-mill contestant, but the judges seem to dig it, even if Simon didn’t know the song. His musical ignorance astounds me. I’m sure she’ll sail through this round simply because, unlike so many others, she’s not forgettable.
