Newsreaders are supposed to have a friendly rapport, designed to put their audience at ease and lead easily from one story to the next. But that’s not always the case, as this awkwardly funny video from Australia shows.
It shows Mark Aiston waxing lyrical about cricket’s most important gong, the Ashes. He comments that the urn is “small but so impressive,” setting his co-anchor Belinda Heggen up for the sting.
Some critics have suggested that was staged, but one look at Aiston’s face convinces me this is no planned piece of snark. Yes it’s brutal, but I’ve got to praise Heggen for her quick wit!
