This video shows Lindsey Stirling performing Crystallize, a composition which is part classical violin, part dubstep. Surprisingly it works really rather well.
I like some classical and I like some dubstep, and the two work well when melded together in this way. This is definitely a case of the total being greater than the sum of its parts.
If you played the violin part of Crystallize it would be rather forgettable, and the same goes for the dubstep part. But place one over the top of the other and you have an inspiring and compelling track.
Perhaps this kind of genre-crossing mashup is the future of music, and our descendants will wonder why we pigeon-holed music so neatly. Perhaps.
