Charlize Theron’s “Atomic Blonde” raked in a whopping $1.5 million on Thursday, while “The Emoji Movie” brought in a cool $900,000.
“Atomic Blonde” is projected to bring in $20 million in its opening weekend. The film, which has a $30 million price tag, follows Charlize Theron’s character during the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 Germany.
Theron’s character is a British spy sent to Germany to find out who killed an agent. She is sent alone to retrieve a dossier and cooperate with James McAvoy’s character.
The film is based on Antony Johnston and Sam Hurt’s 2012 novel “The Coldest City,” and will open in theaters nationwide today.
“Atomic Blonde” was screened at more than 2,500 locations in North America on Thursday, and “The Emoji” film began screenings at 5 pm at around 2,200 venues.
“Atomic Blonde” has been called the female James Bond movie, and her role as an assassin in the film has sparked rumors that Theron may be cast as the first female James Bond.
Her co-star Chris Hemsworth teased that Theron could “beat the sh**t” out of him, and has put her name on the list of potential future Bond players.
“Atomic Blonde” has received great reviews from critics, with the film having a 76% “fresh” rating on the Rotten Tomatoes site.
“The Emoji Movie,” which reveals the secret lives of emojis in a teenager’s smartphone, hasn’t been as well received. The film has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the film’s target audience belongs to the critic-proof teens and younger children demographic.
“The Emoji Movie” will expand to over 4,000 venues on Friday. Studios are projecting a $20 million debut. The film has a $50 million budget.
All eyes will also be on “Dunkirk” this weekend. The World War II drama beat expectations with a $50.5 million opening weekend. The film finished its first week at $74.3 million.
