Abbott and Costello were a little before my time. About 30 years before my time in fact. However, the fact that some of their comedy routines can still raise a laugh to this day says a lot about how clever they were.
This is an example of their ‘7 times 13 = 28’ routine, in which Costello swears blind that 28 can be divided by seven 13 times. And he has the math skills to prove it.
OK, so his math is a little off, with tens being counted as ones and all that jazz. But the fact we know it’s wrong doesn’t make it any less funny to watch.
This video is proof that some comedy is timeless. While the modern comedians who are mostly observational will date badly, it’s these guys that will be remembered far into the future. And rightly so.
