It was Conan O’Brien’s last Tonight Show on NBC last night, as he ends his short spell in charge of the show and prepares to hand it back to Jay Leno, who only left last year.
Conan wasn’t going to head out the door quietly though, as this video of his last moments on air show. Aided by Beck and Will Ferrell, Conan performs Free Bird, that guitar opus which lasts seven full minutes.
O’Brien also had some guests on, one of whom was Tom Hanks. And they chose to play Lovely Rita as Hanks’ walk on song, costing NBC a reported $500,000 in the process. This was on top of stunts earlier in the week designed purely to blow NBC’s budget.
Is it just me that thinks this is childish, petty, and just a little bit morally repugnant? There are many worthy causes more deserving of that money than getting one over on NBC. Like Haiti, for example. It’s made me glad he’s going, especially as Letterman is better than the lot of them.
