Director, David Mamet, claims that the movie is not a documentary, that it separates itself from reality as he says in his own words, that this movie is “not about Phil Spector.” But really, how does he expect us to believe this when the title speaks for itself? What the hell is this guy trying to say?
He must be practicing some witty surrealistic sarcasm. Which reminds me so much of that one surrealistic painting by Salvador Dali, “This is not a pipe.” But it totally is a painting of a pipe. Oh intellectuals and their cryptic nonsense!
The film actually opens with a statement saying, “This is a work of fiction. It’s not based on a true story.” Do you get it? What we’re the viewers are about to watch is so made up that it’s not really related to reality. Or So he wants us to believe…
