The Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia has run aground off the Italian coast close to the island of Giglio.
The good news is the vast majority of the 3,200-odd passengers are safe and well, having been rescued and taken ashore. But three people are known to have died, at least 20 were injured, and up to 50 remain unaccounted for.
So, this isn’t a disaster on the scale of Titanic, despite what some are suggesting. But it is a tragedy for those already lost and could end up being huge if those 50 people aren’t found alive and well.
This footage has a haunting quality to it. There are obviously very few people on board at this point, but it’s terrible to see such a majestic and sizable ship effectively dead in the water.
