The well-respected and much-loved actress Dixie Carter has died at the age of 70. It was announced that she passed away on Saturday morning, but no further details regarding her death have yet been revealed.
Carter will be best-remembered for playing the domineering mother-hen Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women, a dramatic sitcom which ran from 1986 to 1993, and which inspired Sex and The City.
However, Carter had a long and impressive career away from that show, playing Gloria Hodge, the mother-in-law from Hell on Desperate Housewives, and also starring in Filthy Rich and Diff’rent Strokes.
Carter was still working up to last year, on the film That Evening Sun. She is survived by her husband Hal Holbrook and two daughters. All of whom will no doubt be proud of the legacy she is leaving behind.
