“Dumbledore is gay”, wow, I never expected that, I must admit. JK Rowling outed the Hogwarts headmaster in front of a packed audience of fans at Carnegie Hall in New York. We already had our doubts about Harry’s sexuality!
This video shows Emerson Spartz of MuggleNet (one of the biggest Harry Potter fan sites on the web) speaking about the controversial yet flippant remark on Geraldo.
I’m really glad Dumbledore is gay, children’s literature has been crying out for a strong gay character for years, and what better choice than Albus Dumbledore, the brave and heroic headmaster of Hogwarts?
The only problem is Rowling waited until 3 months after the seventh and final book was released before revealing this starting revelation. Surely it would have been better to announce it in the book itself? As it is, HP fans have lapped it up.
I can only assume it was because it would have been too controversial to put an openly gay character with the gravitas of Dumbledore in a massively popular children’s book.
Credit to Rowling though, she is the master of suspense and self publicity. Waiting three months has put Harry Potter firmly back in the news headlines, even after the series has all but ended… brilliantly done.
