E3 2009: Xbox 360 Project Natal Video | Microsoft Unveils Full-Body Motion-Sensing

The Wii has been an absolute phenomenon in the games industry, beating both the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of sales month after month since release. For one solitary reason – motion-sensing, the chance to control games with gestures.

It’s been widely suspected for months now that either Sony or Microsoft would follow suit and try to claw back some of the ground lost to Nintendo. And so it was no surprise to see Project Natal, a motion-sensing system for the Xbox 360 unveiled at E3 2009.

The above is the preview video shown at E3 2009. It’s basically a tech demo, showing what Project Natal is capable of doing. Which is effectively full-body game control, with the system able to detect movements from multiple body parts and limbs.

It looks amazing at this point but it’s not due out for a loooooong time, and I can’t help wondering if the final product will be quite as good as Microsoft is claiming. If so then Nintendo will be blown out of the water. Goodbye Wii, hello Xbox 360.
