Elizabeth Edwards has died of cancer at the age of 61. Edwards was the estranged wife of former democratic presidential candidate John Edwards and an author in her own right.
Edwards was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, but went into remission after treatment. Unfortunately the illness returned in 2007 and then spread to other parts of her body.
Edwards wrote two books, Resilience and Saving Graces, telling the story of her battle with the illness and the scandal surrounding her husband, who admitted to fathering a child with another woman earlier this year.
This is one woman whose presence will be felt in the U.S., as she was a high-profile campaigner for health reform. She leaves behind an estranged husband, two daughters, and a son.
