If you’ve ever wondered why building codes are so strict in many places, you should see this video of the five-story Firdos building collapsing in Surat, India. In the beginning it looks totally normal, but it slowly starts leaning, little by little. Eventually it comes crashing down, and as it hits the ground it just seems to disintegrate.
Notice that nobody goes running into the building to try to get people out, but they throw stones in warning instead. It seemed a little strange to me at first, but that was quite possibly the smartest thing they could have done. If people had gone rushing in, it very well could have sped up the process and hurt a lot of people.
