When a BBC reporter was asked to bring down a cut-out of Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps to Tienanmen Square, he didn’t think twice about his striking resemblance to him.
Within a matter of minutes, Chinese Phelps fans swarm around the poor guy and start taking pictures.
Steve Parry here is actually an Olympic swimming medalist himself (he won Bronze in Athens), however, now he finally gets to know what it’s like to take Gold. “I’m NOT Michael Phelps!” he keeps repeating, but no one understands him.
I have to admit, if I was mistaken for a celebrity I would probably take advantage of it rather than feeling like a big “fraud.” The next time Steve gets mistaken for the Olympic champion, I think he should feel obligated to smile and sign a few autographs.
Perhaps funniest part of this clip occurs at the 1:32 mark when the whole crowd says, “Ahhh.” as if they understand him. Of course they have no idea.
