Velcro, which is a company in its right, has published a video on YouTube asking everyone to stop using the word “velcro” to refer to similar products that aren’t actually made by Velcro.
The video comprises a bunch of Velcro lawyers (not really) singing a little ditty about how people are damaging the company’s brand.
Honestly, I don’t think anyone is going to stop using the word “velcro” as a catch-all term for things that fasten together in that way. Because that horse has bolted.
I also think Velcro (the company) knows this. So this isn’t a serious attempt at stopping people using the word, but a way of advertising the company on the cheap. It’s worked, too.
