Clocking in at 79 minutes, the Game of Thrones penultimate season ended with a huge reveal that may have characters cringing in the next season. (Warning: spoilers ahead)
“The Dragon and the Wolf” confirmed one of the fandom’s most popular theories: That Jon Snow is a Targaryen. In the final minutes of the finale, Bran, while talking to the newly-returned Sam Tarley, reveals that Jon is actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.
Also, he’s not a bastard – he’s legitimate. The two married in a secret ceremony, and his name is Aegon Targaryen. That makes him the rightful heir to the iron throne.
In other words, Daenerys is his aunt – which will make for an awkward final season. As Bran jumps into one of his visions to confirm the details, Dany and Jon were consummating their relationship.
Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys, was blown away by the reveal. Her reaction? “Ewwww!”
Clarke says Dany will likely be disgusted by the news next season.
“I think that’s how it’s going to go. I get the toothbrush –”
Those feelings of disgust may quickly turn to feelings of hate when Dany learns that Jon (or Aegon) is the rightful heir.
“I’ve worked so hard, I don’t want to share that throne,” said Clarke. “No. The throne’s big enough for one dragon bum, and that’s mine. That’s it!”
The reveal of Jon’s true identity will undoubtedly impact their relationship, but the actors aren’t keen to open up about that information just yet.
“It could be them walking off into the sunset. It could be them killing each other,” said Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow.
“Just as we’re seeing these two people come together, we’re hearing the information that will inevitably, if not tear them apart, at least cause real problems in their relationship,” said D.B. Weiss, co-showrunner. “And she’s his aunt.”
