Clokey was adopted at the age of 12 and schooled in painting, drawing, and film-making by his adopted father. He died in 2010 at the age of 88.

Gumby was the main character of The Gumby Show, which ran for 233 episodes covering a 35-year period. Created in the 1950s it ran for 35 years until 1989. The series can now be seen online on YouTube.

The interactive Google Doodle comprises lumps of gumbo which when touched with the cursor transform into the main characters from The Gumby Show.
