Gyrocopters aren’t exactly a common sight these days. Hell, even my spellchecker has just flagged the word up as being non-existent, thus proving the point.
However, they do still exist, and are in the news today thanks to a disgruntled mailman flying one into the restricted airspace around the White House.
Doug Hughes landed his ultralight flying machine on the Capitol Lawn, where he was arrested by the authorities. His gyrocopter was treated like an explosive device, with the bomb squad in attendance.
Hughes’ plan was to deliver letters to every member of Congress demanding reform of the laws regarding campaign finance. Which has clearly got out of control.
