While CG animated movies can be absolutely brilliant – Wall-E, Toy Story 3, Shrek – they can also be horrible, fuddled messes. We’ve had the horrors of Alvin and The Chipmunks and G-Force, and now here is another crap animated flick to complete the triptych.
Hop looks on paper to have all the right ingredients to make for a genius film. Russell Brand, Hugh Laurie, and James Marsden all starring, and Tim Hill (Garfield) directing. Unfortunately the end product doesn’t live up to the promise.
The storyline is weak and uninspired, the script utterly banal. There is no real peril involved, and the laughs are few and far between. In other words it’s a stinker.
You can tell it is just from the trailer. Promos are meant to persuade you to go and see a movie at all costs, this one makes you want to avoid seeing Hop at all costs. And that would be my recommendation as well, unless you’re 8-years-old.
