Most of these videos use the same filter, so in order to understand why these videos look the way they do, Tom Scott spoke to the designer of the filter.

This video offers a look at this particular video filter, and learning how they created the imperfections is truly fascinating.

The biggest thing for me is realizing the work that went into creating the 90s VHS filter, as most of us use filters without ever thinking about the people who created them.
