John Madden, the man not the video game, has retired from broadcasting after being sat behind a microphone taking about the game he loves for 30 years. Now 73-years-old, Madden’s style will be much-missed and much-copied.
Madden started out as an American football coach before packing that in while leading the Oakland Raiders in 1979. Ever since then he has been a mainstay of football commentary with stints at ABC, Fox, and CBS.
Even those of us who don’t follow U.S. football (I’m British so it’s understandable) knew the man through the series of video games bearing his name. These have made him a household name outside of the States.
This video shows what would happen in John Madden took charge of a game of Dungeons and Dragons. It’s not only funny but also shows Madden’s commentary style perfectly. Will there ever be another like him?
