The world is down one more species after the recent death of Lonesome George, the last remaining Pinta Island Tortoise at the Galapagos National Park.
It’s unclear what caused the tortoise’s passing, but as he was estimated to be around 100 years old perhaps he just fell off the perch!
Lonesome George was found in 1972, a time when his species was already thought to be extinct. Efforts to breed him with the similar Espanola tortoises proved unsuccessful.
So Lonesome George died a bachelor, unencumbered by kids and with the national park servicing his every whim. It doesn’t sound a bad way to live out your days, does it?
