Most of us at one point or another have neglected to return a library book. But most of us don’t hang onto them for 145 years!

A book stolen by a Civil War soldier has finally been returned to Virginia’s Washington and Lee University Library, 145 years after it was first checked out. I’m sure he had a few more important things on his mind!

Remarkably the book’s in pretty good shape, with only a loose binder marring its appearance.

As you’d imagine, a book so overdue is likely to clock up a fairly hefty late fee. Luckily for the soldier’s descendants, the library has agreed to waive the $52,000 fine!
