As part of the Nautilus Live expeditions into deep water, some marine biologists stumbled on a dead whale being consumed on the bottom of the ocean.
When whales die their bodies sink to the seabed. They then slowly decompose, providing food for thousands of species, and nutrients for the surrounding area.
It’s estimated that this whale died about four months before it was discovered. And yet there are still species feasting on its remains.
Seeing fish, octopii, eels, and worms all feasting on the carcass of a whale is a reminder of how awesome nature is. And how death can sustain life.
