When I heard Channing Tatum was making a film about his pre-acting life as a stripper I was incredulous. As biopic topics go, pretty boy Tatum hardly has the weight of a musical prodigy or political pioneer. Now that I’ve seen the trailer for Magic Mike, I remain incredulous.
Frankly this looks like a great excuse to see some good looking men. That’s certainly a worthwhile pursuit, but let’s not pretend it’s anything more than that.
The script seems to take itself far too seriously, but taken in the right way Magic Mike could actually be a bit of fun. I expect it to reach the sort of cult status Showgirls enjoys; as a drama it fails but as a comedy there’s some potential.
Prepare for a perv when Magic Mike hits American cinemas on June 29.
