After Brexit and President Trump it was starting to feel like the whole world was taking a sharp turn right, rejecting liberalism.
Thankfully, that turns out not to be the case. In The Netherlands at least, liberalism lives on, with Prime Minister Mark Rutte scoring a famous victory in the 2017 Dutch elections.
Hutte faced a stiff challenge from Geert Wilders, the right-wing firebrand who is against immigration. Wilders won some seats, but not enough to seize power.
The next big challenge for liberals will be the French elections, with Marine Le Pen looking likely to win. Which would change the shape of French politics significantly.
