April Fools prank? I think not! Maximus Thaler caught the attention of USA TODAY with his gracious and resourceful goal to create a restaurant whose entrees consist of still usable food thrown out and wasted by supermarkets to feed the hungry for free!
Yeah, it might sound gross at first, but it seems Maximus and his fellow chefs have been hard at work finding food that is just as good and edible for any healthy person to eat without worry of food poisoning. They find the good produce as well as make use of the bad for broths to create delicious home cooked meals. Better yet, they want to feed people FOR FREE and only ask for donations so they may have an actual property space to facilitate this giving dream.
“We believe food is a fundamental right, and should be shared freely with all,” says the mastermind behind the plan.
Turkey meatballs, organic Greek yogurt, sealed fresh coffee are only some of the things this student has found in his dumpster diving to create pasta sauces, fruit juices, even stews and much more to feed those in need. He has great plans for his restaurant it seems as he protests, ” “The Gleaners’ Kitchen is not a business. It is not the place of commerce you might think it to be, where you pay something to get something. Our aim is not to produce commodities but to foster community. ”
A truly kind individual with a clear hippie side, he also says that the Gleaners Kitchen will be having eventful nights where there will be concerts, poetry readings, and art gatherings so long as there are those willing to help create for a good cause. I say, let’s lend the kid a helping hand. Then maybe we can put an end to starving families across the nation and set a better example of how communities should work in a free country.
