An eight lane bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapsed during rush hour on Wednesday, and this surveillance video shows what happened. One minute there was a bridge there, the next the bridge and dozens of vehicles were falling into the river.
The first thing that comes to mind in a situation like this is terrorism, but by all reports that’s not the case. The bridge was deemed structurally deficient in 2005, and apparently the problems were not corrected. Now several people are dead, injured, or missing.
It’s quite unfortunate that these kinds of things happen anywhere, and shocking that they would happen in a developed country on a major interstate highway. There are lessons to be learned here.
