The oldest new mother in the world, Maria del Carmen Bousada, has died at the age of 69, less than three years after giving birth to twin boys as a result of receiving in vitro fertilization treatment in California.
The Spanish woman had fertility treatment at the age of 66 after allegedly lying to the clinic about her age. She told doctors she was 55, which while still very old to be having children, is accepted by law.
Unfortunately, for her and her children, the unmarried Bousada died recently after suffering from cancer. Conflicting reports suggest she was diagnosed either just before or just after giving birth to her sons Cristian and Pau.
This is a tragic end to a story that should never have happened in the first place. The clinic should have had tighter controls on who it treated, and the woman herself was selfish in trying to bring up kids at that age.
