Moving “Dear 40-Year-Old Me” Video | Gay, Lesbian, & Bisexual Teens Speak to Adult Selves

As the world’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual citizens continue to fight for equality and acceptance, things can start looking pretty bleak. Thank goodness for the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, who’s created some hope and optimism with its powerful video “Dear 40-year-old me.”

This video sees eloquent, empassioned teens involved in the alliance speaking to their adult selves. They talk of their struggles to fit in at school and at home, but also of their achievements and pride. It’s a beautifully balanced clip which refuses to get bogged down in negatives.

This video reminds us that no matter how hopeless it seems, change is possible and empowering. I only hope these kids grow up to be the well-adjusted adults they imagine themselves to be.
