Today is National Donut Day, or National Doughnut Day if you speak the Queen’s English. No, it’s not a made-up holiday, it’s actually been held annually since 1938, although back then it was as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. Now? It’s just an excuse to eat donuts without feeling guilty.
National Donut Day occurs on the first Friday of June every year (June 5 this year). It’s not a day to celebrate donuts or anything, just really an excuse to pig out, especially when chains such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme are offering freebies for one day only!
But beware eating too many or you may end up resembling Homer Simpson, the king of the donuts. After selling his soul to the devil for a solitary donut, he is forced to eat all the donuts in the world. Which is meant to be a punishment in Hell but for Homer is some kind of Heaven.
I admit to liking the odd donut but I try and avoid them whenever possibly because they are so bad for you. There really isn’t anything nutritious about them whatsoever, which is why they’re so damn tasty.
