I’m 33-years-old and yet I’ve only just learned that there is such a thing as National Grandparents Day. How strange is that?
As this little girl explains, National Grandparents Day originated in the U.S. in 1978, with Marian McQuade’s efforts finally bringing the efforts made by several other people over the years to bear.
National Grandparents Day is celebrated in several countries around the world, although most have chosen different days. In the States it falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day, so Sept. 12 this year.
My only problem with the holiday is that it leaves out elderly people who aren’t grandparents. Of which there are many. Just because they didn’t have children, or their children didn’t, does that mean they’re worth less? I think not.
