Hot on the heels of Obama’s appearance on The Jay Leno Show, where he made an ill-advised joke about the Special Olympics, comes an interview with the president on 60 Minutes. Again, something happened that is overshadowing the rest of the chat.
While talking about the economic recession, Obama laughs his head off as if it doesn’t really matter. This prompts interviewer Steve Kroft to ask the president, “Are you punch drunk?” Obama then tries to worm his way out of the awkward situation.
In many ways, I feel kind of bad for Barack Obama. Here’s a man who has fulfilled his dream, and the dreams of many others, by becoming the first black President of the United States, and look at the mounting issues he is facing.
If Obama pulls America, and indeed the world, out of the deep recession it’s in then his presidency will be remembered for generations to come. If, on the other hand, he fails then we’ll look back on his time in office as we now look back on George Bush’s time in office: as a disaster.
I’m not sure I’d be laughing if that’s the mammoth task I was facing.
