Super Bowl Sunday in the States doesn’t just bring everyone together to watch a game of football. No, there’s also the halftime show, usually starring a big-name musician or two, and those high-budget adverts starring celebrities galore.
This one, for Pepsi Cola, is the best I saw. It’s basically a spoof on the 1980s show, MacGyver, except he’s now named MacGruber. At least he is until Pepsi sponsor the show at which point MacGruber (formerly MacGyver) becomes PepSuber. Brilliant.
The pay-off at the end is very funny, with PepSuber failing to disarm a bomb and stop a boat from exploding because he’s too busy drinking his can of Pepsi. It’s cool because it’s Pepsi taking the piss out of themselves and the way films and television shows are sponsored these days.
Those familiar with the original MacGyver will notice Richard Dean Anderson, MacGyver himself, in the ad, playing PepSuber’s mulleted friend. Good on him for having enough of a sense of humor to send himself up. And good on Pepsi for doing the same.
