The “Ban The Bag” bill has definitely been making some waves this week. The bill, which would place a state-wide ban on single-use plastic bags is even being supported by actresses like Amy Smart and Rosario Dawson.
Personally, I’m 100% behind this environmentally-conscious movement since, statistically, only about 2% of plastics actually get recycled.
It looks like the phrase “paper or plastic?” is about to change into “paper or cloth?” pretty soon. Plastics, are after all, made with the use of oil- what will it take for us to realize we need to stop consuming so much? Another BP crisis maybe?
Here are a few key points of the bill:
- All supermarkets would stop carrying plastic bags by 2012.
- If customers don’t bring their own bag, a 40% recycled paper bag will be provided to them for cents on the dollar.
- Stores cannot profit from the charging of grocery bags, and people with food stamps would get them for free.
