Plastic-Eating Mushrooms Found (Video) | Can Amazon’s Fungi Rid Our Waste Problem?

26 sec read

I’m always interested in mushroom research (including the TED talk about mushrooms), and this new discovery is nothing less than amazing. The fungi, called Pestalotiopsis Microspora, can apparently eat plastic which would otherwise take thousands of years to breakdown.

The next step is to bring these to landfills.

I’m also a huge fan of Joe Rogan, I can see why he’s excited with this research. Oyster mushrooms are already known to eat oil and I’m honestly surprised this fungi wasn’t found earlier. Knowing the US government, it will probably take years to utilize these mushrooms to their full potential.

The amount of waste our country produces is disastrous. Obviously, there has to be a limit with the amount we dump in the ocean.
