I’m not a huge fan of horse racing – it’s cruel and without the addition of betting on the outcome would be one of the most boring spectator sports known to man. However, I’m clearly in the minority as the Sport of Kings continues to pull in the punters.
Yesterday (May 16) saw the 2009 Preakness Stakes take place, and the video of the race is above. This was the 134th hosting of The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans, the second most famous American horse race behind the Kentucky Derby.
Rachel Alexandra, a three-year-old filly, became the first filly to win the Preakness Stakes for 85 years, a quite incredible achievement. But she’s a good horse, having persuaded punters to bet her up to be the favorite for the race.
The Preakness is the second leg of the thoroughbred Triple Crown series, and Rachel Alexander’s jockey, Calvin Borel, has now the first two legs on two different horses. Can he make it a hat-trick by also winning the Belmont Stakes on June 6?
