PSN has been down since Wednesday (April 20), when Sony took the online portion of its PS3 service offline after it detected an “external intrusion.” In other words, someone was trying to hack into the system.
Hackers are thought to be responsible, and Anonymous have been heavily implicated in the plot. The organization has denied it’s involved, but as it’s a disparate group of hackers no one really knows.
The Playstation Network has now been down for almost a week, and there’s no sign of it bouncing back to life quite yet. Sony is busy rebuilding the network from the ground up in order to ensure the security of its users.
While Sony has undoubtedly done the right thing on this occasion, many PS3 gamers are becoming frustrated by their inability to play online. And the Japanese company’s distinct lack of communication isn’t helping matters.
