R.E.M. is soon to be no more, as the alternative rock group from Georgia are officially splitting after 31 years together.
Being 34-year-old, R.E.M. has been a constant through most of my life. I probably first heard of them in 1987 when I was just 10, thanks to The One I Love. And I remember buying Automatic For The People, along with what seemed at the time like everyone else in the world.
It’s sad to see them going their separate ways, but like so many other bands, it had started to feel like they had peaked and were just flogging a dead horse at this stage.
A compilation album titled Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982–2011 is being released in November, and then it’s all over. Which leaves U2 as the biggest band in the world. There clearly is no justice.
