There have been a ton of new web series popping up ever since the start of the TV writers’ strike. Shows like Quarterlife are textbook examples of this predicament. This effect has been felt all around the world, even in far-away countries like India.
Introducing Ram and Ria, the the first “online micro sitcom” from India.
The show focuses around the lives of two English speaking Indians: Ram and Ria. Ram, “the quintessential South Indian” and Ria, “the cosmopolitan Mumbaikar” (that’s Desi lingo for “resident of Mumbai”). The show is full of Indian stereotypes, however, that’s what makes it funny.
So exactly what is a micro sitcom? Well, simply take your average TV sitcom and condense it down to about… one minute. V Balakrishnan, who plays Ram, says:
“People (especially who are net savvy) hardly have time for long running serials and sitcoms in general. A short story that lasts 40 seconds to one minute, which is a more of a quick joke, is always accessible in between their busy work schedules, and is a great stress buster.”
So far, the show has received a good response from its target audience and a second season is planned.
