Richard Engel, the chief foreign correspondent for NBC News, has been freed from captivity in Syria after being abducted and held against his will for five days. The three members of his crew taken have also been released unharmed.
This video shows his release being reported on, and there’s a palpable sense of relief. The group who abducted Engel and his crew haven’t come out publicly, but it’s believed to have been pro-government militia.
Syria is clearly a very dangerous place to report from, and all journalists are at risk when they enter the country. Engel was captured as he crossed the border from Turkey.
Who in their right mind would be a foreign correspondent in these dangerous times? I guess somebody has to do it, I’m just glad it isn’t me.
