Revered U.S. ambassador Richard Holbrooke has sadly died at the age of 69 after undergoing emergency heart surgery that wasn’t successful.
Holbrooke was an important U.S. diplomat who has helped ease tensions around the world, especially in reference to U.S. foreign policy. He was instrumental in forging the Bosnia peace plan in 1995.
he began his political career in 1977 under Jimmy Carter, and in recent years he was the special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan under Barack Obama.
Holbrooke fell ill on Friday after suffering a torn aorta. He underwent 20 hours of heart surgery but died on Monday. Holbrooke is survived by his widow Kati Marton, his two sons and their families, and two stepchildren.
