The world has lost another great musical talent with the passing of Dobie Gray. The “Drift Away” singer died yesterday at 71.
While he’s regarded as a bit of a one-hit wonder, Gray actually wrote songs for a host of musicians including Ray Charles, Etta James, Nina Simone, Julio Iglesias, and John Denver.
But he arguably kept the best for himself, “Drift Away.” The song reached number five on the Billboard charts in 1973 and sold millions of copies. This performance shows Gray performing his greatest hit on Great Britain’s BBC channel.
This clip serves as a timely reminder of the talent the world has lost. Rest in peace.
