The idea of Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas taking on a retro Madonna hit seems pretty farfetched, and the idea of it sounding good even more so. But that’s just what we get in this brilliant video.
Thomas slows the song down, passing over the boppy synthesizers of the original for a stripped back piano treatment. It draws our attention to the lyrics and the quality of this pop song, transforming this fun and frothy tune into something more meaningful.
I’m not sure Madonna or her faithful fans would warm to this radical reworking, but I think it’s a stroke of musical genius!
