ABC has ordered a revival of the hit television show Roseanne. The sitcom was cancelled two decades ago, but will continue with the family living paycheck-to-paycheck in 2018. The plans for a return of the show were revealed by Channing Dungey, president of ABC. Dungey broke the news during a conference call with reporters.
“We’re rebooting Roseanne,” she said.
The plan is to have the show ready for midseason, with Dungey stating that they’re still in the very early stages of bringing the show back. The sitcom will have an eight-episode revival, according to the company’s press release.
Rumors of a potential revival had many networks vying for the opportunity to bring the show back, but ABC, the former network for the show, came out ahead.
Roseanne Barr, Sara Gilbert and John Goodman will all return to the show. The original producers of the show will be joined by Whitney Cummings. Many of the original cast members will rejoin the family as they discuss the economic struggles of 2018.
Roseanne ran for nine years from 1988 to 1997 and won 17 Emmy awards along the way.
Goodman is slated to return to the show, but it will be interesting to see how he returns after his character died of a heart attack in the final season of the show. Sara Gilbert, who played the role of Darlene in the show, is said to had spearheaded the return of the sitcom.
Television stations have been on a roll, with television show revivals bringing back some of the most famous shows, including Prison Break and Will & Grace as well as the C-Files. Twin Peaks is also getting a revival, albeit on a different network.
Roseanne will be the network’s only multicamera comedy on the schedule in 2017 – 2018.
An airing date has not been provided at this time.
