It may be the first amendment, but this video shows free speech isn’t alive and well in America. Or at least, not on the Fox Network.
When Sally Field won the best actress Emmy for her role in Brothers and Sisters, the network were happy for her to present a run-of-the-mill acceptance speech.
It’s acceptable to bore the audience thanking everyone you know, and even to applaud all the mothers in the United States. But when that speech starts to take an anti-war bent, the network has to step in.
And so in the climax of Sally’s speech, all of America saw a silent, still shot of the auditorium. For the record, she said, “If the mothers ruled the world there would be no goddamn wars in the first place.” She’s probably right.
