The Italian Government has put the island of Poveglia up for auction in order to help pay off its crippling national debt. But who on earth would want to live here?!
On the face of it Poveglia looks like the perfect place to buy. It’s a 17-acre island close to Venice that has a long history and some beautiful buildings.
The problem is that long history is filled with death and anguish, with Poveglia having been used as a quarantine for victims of the plague and later as a mental hospital.
If anyone can see past the thousands of bodies buried in mass graves then perhaps they could turn this into something special. But I’d be too fearful to even set foot on the island.
